GWNET is implementing a women’s empowerment component as part of the larger project Establishing a Bavarian-Kenyan cooperation platform for promoting a green hydrogen ecosystem in Kenya. The cooperation platform aims to support the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem in Kenya by promoting long-term collaboration between Bavarian and Kenyan actors from the private sector, research and development, and higher education, facilitating knowledge exchange, joint initiatives, and capacity building.
GWNET is undertaking several women’s empowerment activities, including a needs assessment, a mentoring programme, the development of a network of women in green hydrogen in Kenya, virtual and in-person trainings, and a study tour to connect Kenyan women working in green hydrogen with Bavarian counterparts.
A rapid assessment of existing and emerging gender gaps in the Kenyan green hydrogen ecosystem, and identification of interventions to close these gaps.
A cohort of 15 upcoming leaders in the Kenyan green hydrogen space will receive one-on-one mentoring from senior experts in Bavaria and elsewhere. Find out more here.
A series of training modules on technical and soft skills topics, to enhance participants’ leadership skills as well as their ability to develop feasible green hydrogen projects in Kenya.
The launch and strengthening of a broader network of women working in green hydrogen in Kenya, and the connection of this network to similar groups in other regions, including Tunisia.
A week-long study tour to the Smarter E trade fair and Hydrogen Dialogue Forum in Munich, in June 2026, where participants will have the chance to learn about the latest green hydrogen developments in Bavaria and beyond, and site visits to allow networking with Bavarian stakeholders.
The Bavarian-Kenyan cooperation platform for promoting a green hydrogen ecosystem in Kenya is part of the German Government and Federal States Programme (Bund-Länder-Programm, BLP) and is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Developement and Cooperation (BMZ) and co-funded by the Bavarian State Chancellery. Implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum (MoEP) and Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) and other Kenian partners, the initiative brings together stakeholders from industry, academia, and research institutions.
