Short Bio:
My full name is Selam Masresha Tefera. I am an enthusiastic advocate for environmental sustainability with a passion for creating impactful change. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a Master’s in Environmental Engineering from Addis Ababa University. Throughout my academic journey, I have conducted impactful research on biochar and bio-oil production, with a focus on innovative solutions for soil contamination and waste management. My work includes utilizing agricultural waste to produce bio-oil and successfully remediating heavy metal-contaminated soils using sugarcane straw-derived biochar—demonstrating significant effectiveness in both soil restoration and waste management. After completing my studies, I worked as a researcher for a year before spending three years as an English teacher for grade school students. This experience deepened my understanding of how I could positively influence young minds. Currently, I serve as a science and mathematics teacher for middle and high school students on the online educational platform, International Schooling. In addition to my teaching role, I am working on personal projects aimed at developing environmental solutions to issues related to soil toxicity and carbon sequestration.
