At this year’s UNFCCC Conference of Parties in Dubai, GWNET Project Manager Natália Weber took part in a range of events, highlighting the need for gender-just energy transitions that benefit from women’s expertise and result in renewables-based energy systems that leave no one behind.
Below, we present some highlights of GWNET’s COP participation.
Women in Renewables Dialogue, organized by the Women in Renewables Alliance (WiRA)
This event brought together women in renewable energy networks from around the world for an afternoon of discussions and networking. Also at this event, WiRA, GWNET, and Diversity Champions signed an MoU pledging to work to advance diversity and inclusion in industry.
Empowering the Future: How Diversity and Equality Lay the Foundation for a Just and Sustainable Energy Transition organized by Nordic Energy Research and Empowering the Future
This event explored the link between gender equality and diversity and the success of climate goals, shedding light on the untapped benefits and fresh perspectives that a more diverse approach can bring to the forefront. As Hera Grimdottir, Chief of Research and Innovation at Orkuveita Reykjavíkur, said: “Why use only half of the brain power when you can use it all?” A recording of the event can be found here.
Networking Event: Government & business united for a gender equal energy transition, organized by Women Energize Women and GWNET
This lively morning event on the terrace of the COP28 Siemens Experience Center facilitated informal networking among dedicated women in energy and allies from government and business.
ALL IN FOR 1.5°: Accelerating technologies and gender equality in renewable energy, organized by Women Energize Women and GWNET
This event highlighted the technologies that help drive the quest for 1.5 degrees, and the needs of the different sectors in terms of workforce and institutional support to keep 1.5 alive.

At this event, representatives of different renewable energy subsectors drew attention to the need to advance gender equality in renewable energy.
Education and Skills Challenges and Action for Accelerating Gender Equality in the Just Energy Transition, organized by the Government of Spain
