Description: The COP26 summit hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, and simultaneously via an online platform brought together parties to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) in partnership with the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, hosted a focused SDG7 Pavilion in the Blue Zone at COP26. The pavilion united SDG7 stakeholders to mobilise and connect bold commitments and actions for energy around the globe. The aim was to ensure that we have more defined and attainable objectives set in place for an effective energy transition, a target that would be beneficial to all.
GWNET took part in two events as part of COP26: a side-event under the SDG 7 Pavilion in cooperation with ENERGIA and UNIDO and the Virtual Gender Market Place.
At the SDG 7 Pavilion side-event titled “Enhancing gender equality and women’s empowerment to accelerate a just, inclusive and climate resilient energy transition” advocating nations, signatories and allies of the Gender and Energy Compact laid out activities that should be tended to in order to enhance gender equality and women’s empowerment. Women energy professionals had a chance to share their experiences and tips with fellow women involved in the sector. GWNET Senior Advisor, Irene Giner-Reichl, used the opportunity to speak on GWNET’s efforts to promote gender-sensitive action around the world in order to ensure a fair energy transition.
GWNET also led a booth at the Virtual Gender Market Place later in the day, which aimed to create space for networking and the exchange of experiences and projects on gender and climate change issues. The Market Place brought together contracting parties and organisations operating at the international, national, local, regional, and community levels. GWNET Executive Director, Christine Lins, Communications Manager, Davina Ngei and Project Assistant, Eva Hauser, took part in this event to engage stakeholders on our efforts in meeting the collective goal of the energy transition, while also ensuring fairness in regards to gender inclusion.
